Europe  France

In the last twenty years, the French banking system has shifted from heavy State involvement to nearly complete privatization.

The rationalization of banking structures has created a much more liberalized environment, in which many more credit institutions are now operating. It has also resulted in diversification of business and the opening up of the French banking sector to international markets in an increasingly competitive environment.

Foreign banks hold a significant market share in some business sectors, and foreign ownership of French credit institutions has become widespread.
