Europe  The Netherlands

Bank supervision in the Netherlands is one of the strongest in Europe. The Dutch Central Bank (de Nederlandsche Bank, DNB) sees to it that the banks carry on their business in a sound and responsible manner. Through its licensing system, DNB ensures that banks meet certain minimum requirements, whilst it also monitors compliance.

Conducting business in a socially responsible manner, or sustainable enterprise, is a concept that has gained importance in the Dutch banking industry. Banks are aware of their position in society and, in this context, are focusing their attention on a large number of banking issues. These issues arise in connection with environmental aspects, lending, aspects of the payment system, the banks’ contribution to the fight against terrorism and fraud, etc. Growing demand for greater transparency and openness are also important developments that Dutch banks are involved in and are giving substance to in every domain.
