GLOBAL FORUM UPDATE 2005:
NCRC’s Annual Conference featured an expanded global track attended by advocates from over 21 countries who assembled in Washington D.C. to discuss access to credit and capital across the globe in addition to 600 representatives from organizations around the U.S.
Founding countries included Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, England, France, Germany, Guatemala, India, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal, Brussels, South Africa, Tanzania, the US and Wales.
The Conference allowed for face-to-face interaction, networking and information exchanges among participants. Discussions included a focus on International and U.S. based issues, research, analysis and case studies presented by various community development and finance experts. Added to the dialogue were current legislative, regulatory and financial issues, latest CRA developments, evolving predatory products, fundraising, reaching underserved communities. Keynote speakers included Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan and Senator (D-NY) Hilary Clinton.
NGO-ECOSOC Consultative Status, May 2005 – NCRC was recommended by the United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations at its 2005 resumed session on the 5th-20th of May to receive Special NGO Consultative Status.
NCRC has now gained access to and has capacity to disseminate information about “Freedom From Want” issues that the UN is involved in. This status allows NCRC invitation and access to key NGO briefings; communications workshops, orientation programs and conferences at the UN level, allowing us to network with other NGOs with similar issues.
Creation of European Coalition for Responsible Credit, Fall 2005 -Following a fruitful international strategy meeting at NCRC’s Annual Conference in Washington DC this past March, the European Allies of NCRC have embarked on the creation of the ECRC – the European Coalition for Responsible Credit. A series of national conferences have been scheduled between this fall and early spring next year in the UK, Germany, Italy, France and Brussels to discuss country specific economic justice issues. NCRC Announces Launch of the Global Community Reinvestment Coalition (GCRC)
In 2006, the GFBI and its global partners birthed a new coalition to promote cooperation on global fair lending issues: The Global Community Reinvestment Coalition (GlobalCRC). Though the GlobalCRC is new and, in many ways, still evolving in response to its international networks, it nonetheless carries the same commitment to principles of "Global Fair Banking", "Global Fair Lending" and "Global Fair Finance" at the core of the Global Fair Banking Initiative from the very beginning. See www.globalfairfinance.net for more.
Dates Set for 2nd Annual International Conference on Responsible Credit 2007
Building on the success of the 2006 annual conference, which brought nearly 200 representatives from 28 nations, the GlobalCRC and its partners, the National Community Reinvestment Coalition and the European Coalition for Responsible Credit are pleased to announce the 2007 international conference “Regulation, Education and Cooperation in Responsible Financial Services.” The conference will be held September 14-15, 2007 in Brussels. For more information, see the conference program here, or contact Jesse Van Tol, at jvantol@ncrc.org.
