Keys from the Crisis
Introduction
In 2009 alone, 2.8 million Americans lost their homes to
foreclosure. Failure to adequately
address foreclosures has become a major barrier to America’s economic recovery.
Efforts to keep people in their homes and prevent the erosion of home values
continue to be vital to current and future economic recovery efforts. Congress and the Administration’s
inability to adequately deal with this problem has devastated millions of
American families. We need your help
in championing effective and comprehensive foreclosure mitigation. We want to
humanize the foreclosure crisis by collecting your photos, your stories and
your “keys from the crisis”.
About the “Keys from the Crisis” Initiative
Through the “Keys
from the Crisis” initiative, we want to get you and your communities actively involved in making the
foreclosure crisis “real” for Congress. With you, our rallying cry will demand
real solutions to the foreclosure epidemic that lies at the heart of the
continuing economic collapse.
“Keys
from the Crisis” puts a human face on the foreclosure crisis by
engaging people like you and community groups around the country. We will work to gather allies and influence
Congress and the Administration to get more aggressive about keeping families
in their homes by collecting and displaying keys as a symbolic representation
of nameless and voiceless victims whom have little representation in
Washington.
Homeownership has always been the American dream. When a
homeowner uses their house key for the first time, it symbolizes the unlocking
of the “American dream.” When these homes are foreclosed upon the American
dream is destroyed; the keys once used to open front doors can no longer
fulfill their purpose.
We are gathering keys that no longer open front doors to homes and hearths. Now your submitted keys will symbolize the human cost of the darkening economy, the destabilization of families, and the destruction of financial dreams. “Keys from the Crisis” gives you an opportunity to share your personal story of foreclosure, a story of a loved one or a story that has touched your heart.
