The NCRC CDF Loan & Financial Readiness Cohort is an intensive 6-week virtual program designed to help established businesses assess their financial health, strengthen loan readiness, and prepare for responsible business financing.
Through five focused group sessions and individualized financial and loan-readiness counseling, participants will strengthen their financial records, assess repayment capacity, develop a clear financing request, build realistic financial projections, and prepare for the loan application and underwriting process.
The goal is for each participant to complete the program either ready to pursue appropriate financing or with a clear action plan identifying the steps needed to become financing ready.
The program intentionally includes time for participants to apply what they are learning, meet privately with a counselor, complete required materials, address financial or documentation issues, and strengthen their financing package.
The Loan & Financial Readiness Cohort is a 6-week virtual program with five group sessions and a minimum of three required individual counseling meetings.
Group sessions provide the concepts, tools, and practical guidance needed to prepare for financing. Individual counseling allows participants to privately apply what they are learning to their actual financials, debt, financing request, and loan package.
Before the cohort begins, participants will complete a Financial & Loan Readiness Diagnostic to assess their current readiness for financing. The review will examine business and tax compliance, available financial statements, existing debt, credit considerations, financing needs, use of funds, and timing. Each participant will begin the program with an individualized action plan identifying the priority areas they need to address during the cohort.
Participants will learn how to prepare financial information that is complete, current, and consistent for lender review. The session will cover the financial records commonly requested during financing, including Profit & Loss Statements, Balance Sheets, Cash Flow Statements, tax returns, bank statements, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable aging reports, and debt records. Participants will also learn how lenders compare information across financial documents, identify inconsistencies or missing information, and determine what may need to be corrected or updated before applying for financing.
Participants will learn how lenders evaluate the financial health of a business and its ability to responsibly take on debt. The session will examine revenue and profitability trends, cash flow, liquidity, working capital, existing debt obligations, monthly debt service, and repayment capacity, including an introduction to Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR). Participants will also explore how high-cost and short-term debt can affect financing options, when refinancing may make sense, and how lenders determine whether a requested loan amount is supportable based on the business's financial position.
Participants will develop a clear and compelling financing request that explains how much capital the business needs, how the funds will be used, and how the financing will support the business's goals. The session will focus on developing a detailed use-of-funds plan and strengthening the lender-relevant components of the business plan, including the business model, customers and market, management capacity, historical performance, growth strategy, financing need, and repayment story. Participants will learn how to connect their loan request and use of funds to measurable business and financial outcomes.
Participants will develop realistic forward-looking financial projections that demonstrate how the business expects to perform after receiving financing. The session will cover 12-month cash-flow forecasting and longer-term financial projections, with an emphasis on developing reasonable assumptions for revenue, pricing, customer volume, staffing, expenses, seasonality, and working-capital needs. Participants will learn how to connect projected growth to the proposed use of funds and demonstrate whether future cash flow can reasonably support repayment.
Participants will learn how personal and business credit, collateral, guarantees, financing purpose, repayment capacity, and timing can affect available financing options. The session will explore different sources of responsible business financing and help participants consider which options may best fit their needs and financial position. Participants will also learn what to expect during the loan application and underwriting process, including document requests, credit review, financial analysis, lender questions, approval conditions, and closing, as well as circumstances in which taking on additional debt may not be the right next step.
During the final week, participants will complete an individualized lender-style review of their financing package with their counselor. The review will bring together the business's financial statements, tax documentation, existing debt, credit considerations, business plan, financing request, use of funds, financial projections, repayment capacity, and supporting loan documents.
Participants will receive a final readiness assessment identifying whether they are Application Ready, Conditionally Ready, or Not Yet Ready to pursue financing. Where appropriate, financing-ready businesses may be connected to NCRC CDF's lending team or other financing partners.
Participants will receive guidance from experienced professionals in accounting, financial management, business strategy, lending, credit, and capital readiness.
Instructor and advisor information will be provided for each cohort.
