Up until now, this program did not see too many applicants as there was still a federal foreclosure moratorium in effect. Homeowners were also allowed to request a 18-month forbearance which halted mortgage payments for that period.
However, the forbearance option have left many borrowers facing tax foreclosures or foreclosures based on unpaid HOA fees instead. Ibijoke Akinbowale, director of the Housing Network at the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, said “A lot of homeowners didn’t understand they were still responsible for the taxes because they were in forbearance.”
