SUMMARY:Curds of Wisdom - Saving the Community Reinvestment Act
DESCRIPTION:The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA)\, the federal law passed by Congress in 1977 as a response to redlining\, is an important tool that we can use to help the communities we serve. CRA requires banks to meet the lending\, investment\, and banking services needs of the entire community\, including low- and moderate-income (LMI) people. \n\n\n\nWhile there is still much work to be done\, over the years\, banks working to comply with CRA regulations have made huge strides in their work to finance affordable housing\, provide home and business loans\, community development investments to affordable homes\, and financial services that meet the needs of the entire community\, especially LMI people and neighborhoods. \n\n\n\nBut in recent months\, opponents have managed to prevent needed updates to CRA. Join CRA experts Kevin Hill\, Senior Policy Advisor at the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) and Bethany Sanchez\, Senior Administrator for Fair Lending at the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council to learn more about how CRA can help us with our work to increase affordable housing. We can work together to not only protect it against attacks\, but strengthen this important tool for our work!

SUMMARY:Utah Housing Coalition's May Monthly Partner Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join NCRC Senior Director of Research Jason Richarson as he hosts Utah Housing Coalition’s May Monthly Partner Meeting. Richardson will provide an in-depth exploration of Utah’s redlining history and its contemporary impact. \n\n\n\nThrough interactive data visualization and historical documents\, we’ll examine how discriminatory housing practices became embedded through government policies\, social pressures\, and structural barriers in lending. The presentation will connect historical redlining maps with modern mortgage data spanning 40 years\, revealing how century-old patterns continue to shape today’s communities across both urban and rural Utah. We’ll analyze the resulting disparities in wealth accumulation\, health outcomes\, and economic opportunity for Utah residents. \n\n\n\nThe session concludes with concerning new mortgage findings from 2024 that indicate homeownership is increasingly becoming accessible only to those with existing wealth. Throughout the presentation\, you’ll have ample opportunities to engage with the data through interactive tools and participate in Q&A discussions.

SUMMARY:2024 APPAM Fall Research Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join NCRC Senior Director of Research Jason Richardson at the 2024 APPAM Fall Research Conference on Saturday\, November 23. He will be speaking on the panel\, “Cross-Cutting Roundtable – Disappearing Branches: Confronting the Exclusion Crisis in America’s Banking Deserts.” \n\n\n\nDescription \n\n\n\nFinancial inclusion means ensuring basic banking and financial services are available and accessible to everyone\, regardless of income. But what happens when your bank or credit union branch closes and its brick-and-mortar presence disappears? Banking deserts are becoming more common across the U.S. Branch closures accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic amplifies a financial inclusion gap predominately in rural areas. This results in various people — older adults\, those with lower incomes\, and other populations — who may lack FDIC and NCUA-insured banking accounts\, and therefore must rely on alternative financial services to build wealth and sustain financial health. In this session\, we will define and explore banking deserts\, track trends in branch closures\, provide an overview of the current banking desert landscape in the U.S.\, delve into the implications of banking deserts\, including impacts on special populations and the rise of Fintech solutions and mobile banking in underserved areas\, and consider the policy implications and solutions at the federal level that address banking deserts. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nJason Richardson\, NCRC \n\n\n\nKaren Kali\, AARP Public Policy Institute \n\n\n\nAlaina Barca\, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia \n\n\n\nKennan Cepa\, Financial Health Network \n\n\n\nKate Kramer\, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

SUMMARY:Just Economy Conversations: Preserving Homeownership and Wealth Creation by Addressing Heirs’ Property and  Tangled Titles
DESCRIPTION:Join NCRC for Just Economy Conversations\, a series of online discussions addressing America’s racial and socio-economic divides. Experts from NCRC and our network will share ideas and strategies to make a Just Economy a national priority and a local reality. The first in the series\, “Winning Strategies for CDFIs in Special Purpose Credit Programs\,” explored how SPCPs effectively address lending disparities. The second is “Preserving Homeownership and Wealth Creation by Addressing Heir’s Property and Tangled Titles.” \n\n\n\nHeirs’ property is created when a property owner dies without a will or another form of estate planning\, and the property is transferred to their descendants as undivided interest.  A property title can also become tangled when a property owner completed an estate plan before passing\, but their descendants did not complete the formal transfer of title. Without a clear title\, heirs’ property owners are vulnerable to land loss\, unable to acquire housing finance products and face challenges when accessing federal housing rehabilitation and disaster monies. While title resolution requires legal services\, it is imperative that municipalities\, housing organizations\, housing finance entities and philanthropic organizations work collaboratively with the legal sector to support heirs’ property owners.   \n\n\n\nThis webinar will provide an overview of residential heirs’ property in urban and rural areas\,  describing the risks they pose for long-term homeownership and the limits they place on family wealth building. Presenters will discuss proposed housing finance solutions needed to support heirs’ property owners and successful efforts in New York City\, with a focus on lending programs that include eligibility for heirs’ property owners.
